3 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer before Booking

3 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer before Booking

How do you choose a professional wedding photographer?

Choosing a professional wedding photographer can be overwhelming and stressful. There are so many talented artist out there, it can be hard to narrow down to your absolute favorite. Everyone has their own style and personality as well as different prices and package bundles to choose from. So, I’ve put together three questions you should ask your professional wedding photographer before you make your final decision:

1. How long have you been photographing weddings for?

Your wedding day is a once in a lifetime event. There are no do-overs. Finding a wedding photographer with good experience is vital to ensure they can capture your day accurately.

For example, in all of the weddings that I've photographed, I don't think there's been a single one that's stayed entirely on schedule. It's easy to fall behind on your timeline and it takes an experienced professional to be able to realign the wedding day as it happens to make sure all the pictures you want are still captured.

2. How do you select your second shooter?

If your photographer offers a second shooter, either included in the package or as an add on, ask them how they select their second shooter.

I love having a second shooter with me when photographing a wedding. Not only do they act as a second set of eyes capturing important details over the day, but they also add a lot more variety to your image gallery by capturing candid’s and in-the-moment reactions while the main photographer focuses on the main image. For me, it's important to have a second shooter that shoots with a similar style to mine. Someone who I can trust to cover important parts of the day in case we have to split up.

Ultimately, your wedding gallery should be cohesive and you should not be able to tell a difference between the main photographer and the second shooter's pictures.

With Blessed Weddings you know you'll get consisten wedding images as our wedding team consists of two lead photographers, Anna and Johanna, who are the owners of the company!

3. What is your backup plan in case of an emergency?

Life happens and sometimes there is nothing we can do about it. So what happens if your wedding photographer becomes incapable of covering your wedding day?

Obviously as a photographer, I never want this to happen. But if it did happen, I would ensure that my second shooter is qualified enough to step up as the lead photographer providing you a high quality gallery. I would also work to find a new second shooter so you still have two talented professionals on your wedding day. If I were to become incapable of working during the wedding day myself, I would take full responsibility to make sure your day is still covered and you have nothing to worry about!

BONUS: Make sure they have a contract!

Never ever hire a professional without reading through and signing a contract. Make sure you understand everything outlined in the contract, otherwise ask questions. The contract should be put in place to protect both you and your vendor. Without a signed contract there is no legal ground to stand on for either of you if something were to happen before, during or after the wedding.

My wedding contract is a couple of pages long. It looks intimidating with a lot of legal language but has been put together by a lawyer so that both me and my clients are protected. As a professional photographer it's important for me to know that we have something to reference in case we have a difference of opinion.

Time to book your photographer!

So what does this all mean? Your style, your budget and your personal connection should be the biggest factor in selecting your wedding photographer. And sometimes you find several different people that fit the criteria.

I hope these questions will help you narrow down your decision and find a photographer that you will love to have around on the most important day of your life!
