A Great Minnesota Fall Wedding - St Paul Wedding Photographers

A Minnesota Fall Wedding at Como Zoo

The Como Zoo in St Paul, with it’s impressive fall foliage and unique architecture makes for the perfect backdrop for this stunning, intimate and ultimate fall Minnesota wedding.

I met Holly & Max a few years ago while I was still living in MN. They were referred to me by another wedding client of mine and we connected right away. We did their engagement session before I moved and we had so much fun together. They are just the most adorable couple ever and very down to earth. So when I heard they were planning a smaller, more intimate wedding at the Como Zoo in St Paul, MN it sounded just like the perfect wedding for them.

The day of the wedding I met the happy couple at the Hampton Inn in Minneapolis. There awaited the most perfect wedding dress. Simple, yet elegant with an amazing swooping back it was the perfect wedding dress for Holly. Surrounded by her mom and friends her hotel room was filled with laughter and love all morning long while they were getting ready.

The guys were getting ready in the room next to the ladies and we grabbed a few manly getting ready shots of Max before we headed off to Como Zoo to start the portrait shots of the guys. Going back to Minnesota in September I had expected some crisp, fall air. Instead we had a 95 degree sunny day, so our portraits were done while staying in the shade, finding the little piece of airflow we could grasp, and then back in to the AC.

But despite the heat the guys kept their cool and we had so much fun exploring the park and the conservatory!

Now Max and Holly didn’t want to do a traditional first look. Max was very adamant about not wanting to see his bride before she walked down the aisle towards him at the ceremony. But when I threw out the idea of doing a “hidden” first look they both loved that idea. So as we finished up the grooms portraits and the bride and her girls arrived at Como, we set the stage.

With the help from one of the groomsmen’s ties we blindfolded Max leaving him none the wise as to how his bride to be looked. And as much as I love first looks, there’s just something so much more intimate and romantic about a blinded first look.

Following this adorable little “first” look the guys got to take a break from the heat and head in to the AC while the ladies took their turn in front of the camera. I absolutely love the deep purple of the bridesmaid dresses and how well it all ties in with the gorgeous fall inspired flower bouquets.

And while the rest of the wedding party went to set up for the ceremony, me, Holly and my amazing second shooter Caitlin went and explored the Japanese garden at the Como Zoo for some absolutely stunning bridal portraits. These are probably some of my favorite pictures I’ve ever done. I love the colors, the poise of my bride, and the light mixed with the shadows. Every photographer’s dream!

Flower Grannies - YES PLEASE!

Now can we just talk about the Wedding Ceremony here? When Holly filled in her wedding questionnaire that we send out to better prepare for a wedding day, she mentioned something I’ve never heard of before - Flower Grannies!

Yes, instead of little flower girls, Max and Holly had asked their grandmothers to be their flower ladies. What an incredibly honor on both sides. Such a sweet gesture and something I believe both parties appreciated just as much.

The ceremony was filled with laughter and fun Irish traditions, including the physical representation of tying the knot. The weather was absolutely stunning, and the backdrop of the Como Zoo Conservatory made this the perfect setup for this gorgeous wedding ceremony.

It’s a Penguin Party

“Oh and I should probably mention too, there’ll be a penguin at the reception we’d LOVE to get a picture with if possible.”

Uhm say what? I guess you can’t have a wedding at a Zoo and not include one of the exotic animals they house on the premises. Following the ceremony, we enjoyed some time for family pictures, wedding party pictures and then some AMAZING, ROMANTIC, and out of this world STUNNING bride and groom portraits before we headed in to the reception to meet the famous Penguin!

I can’t say enough about how perfect this wedding day was. From the weather, to the location to the people getting married and celebrating. At the very end of the night we had another surprise where the groom’s dad had arranged a really nice car for the couple to go home in. Obviously we had to end the night with some stunning car pictures for this stunning couple!
